Cultivate A “You”nique You

I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
Marvelous are Your works,
And that my soul knows very well.

Psalm 139:14

Who Are You?

Press Play.

What does it mean to be unique?

Is it the color of your hair?  Is it the way you dress?  Is it the music that you listen to?   We are either constantly trying to set ourselves apart from the crowd OR we are desperately trying to fit in.

Unique Defined: Being the only one; being without a like or equal

You are unique. Even though you may share many things in common with other people, you are essentially one of a kind. There is NO ONE like you!  You may here from time to time that you look like another person but your face, your fingerprints, your voice, and your genetic makeup are one of a kind.  God handcrafted you with your personality, your unique talents and motivations.  There is no one else with the exact same makeup that God has given you.

Identity

We all want to know who we are.  We seek and we search and try to “find ourselves”.  Many of us  have taken personality tests and other assessments.  We learn that we “are” a tiger, an aura of amber, an introvert, an extrovert, and on-and-on it goes.   Some may become fascinated with astrology, because it “tells” us who we are and what we expect.    We think, YES!!! this makes so much sense.

We may look around to try to find our identity.  We look to culture, history, social media, mainstream media, family, friends, even enemies.  We may allow these things and people to fashion ideas of “who we are”.

BUT …

What does God think about me?  Who does God say that I am?  In all my years as a Christian, I never asked the question quite this way, until recently.  I discovered that God has a lot to say about what He thinks about me and about you. The entire bible is filled with details about His thoughts of you and me.  If we could summarize it, this is what it may sound like:

You Are Beautiful

Let’s hear and read this with fresh eyes and ears. God made you unique.  He made you, YOU and He made you in HIS IMAGE. You are not made in the image of this world and not what you see on social media as beauty. You are made in HIS IMAGE.  Psalm 139 says,

I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
Marvelous are Your works,
And that my soul knows very well.

Psalm 139:14

God tells me in Psalm 17 that I am the apple of His eye.

Keep me as the apple of your eye;
hide me in the shadow of your wings

Psalm 17:8

Psalm 17

You Are Valuable

How much do you think you are worth?  I am not talking about net worth, but self-worth.

We should never confuse valuables with the value of a person.

You Are Chosen

You are not a mistake.  God handpicked you, created you, and chose you from the womb.

For you are a people holy to the Lord your God. The Lord your God has chosen you to be a people for his treasured possession, out of all the people who are on the face of the earth.

Deuteronomy 7:6

God says, You did not choose me, I CHOSE YOU.

You Are Dearly Loved

We cannot articulate God’s love for you better than His words.

Like a lily among thistles
is my darling among young women.

Song of Solomon 2:2 NIV

Here is the same verse in The Passion Translation.

Yes, you are my darling companion.
You stand out from all the rest.
For though the curse of sin surrounds you,
still you remain as pure as a lily,
    even more than all others.

Song of Solomon 2:2 TPT

Song of Solomon 2

You Are Gifted

You are incredibly gifted.  God gave you talents and gifts, a special anointing.

You are the body of the Anointed One, and each of you is a unique and vital part of it. God has placed in the church the following:

First apostles,
second prophets,
third teachers,
then those with gifts of miracles, gifts of divine healing,
gifts of revelation knowledge, gifts of leadership,
and gifts of different kinds of tongues.

Not everyone is an apostle or a prophet or a teacher. Not everyone performs miracles or has gifts of healing or speaks in tongues or interprets tongues. But you should all constantly boil over with passion in seeking the higher gifts.

And now I will show you a superior way to live that is beyond comparison!

1 Corinthians 12:27-31

1 Corinthians 12

You Are Forgiven and Redeemed

There are not any words that communicate self-worth more than:

YOU ARE FORGIVEN!

Do not miss this!  God does not shame us.  He does not remind us of our past for the purpose of fear or hurt.  We are forgiven.  The enemy of our souls would like to remind us of our sins, failures or short-comings but not God.  Do not let the enemy or people define you by your past.  You are forgiven and your sins are forgotten.

He has removed our sins as far from us
as the east is from the west.

Psalm 103:12

As far as the east is to the west

I don’t know about you but I cannot see what is going on outside of this room, let alone on the east coast.  You are forgiven.  You are redeemed.  You are loved.

You Have A Purpose

What is your purpose?  It is so very simple.

To Know God

To Make God Known

This will look very different for all of us but eternally the reward will be the same.

To Know Him

And this is the way to have eternal life—to know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, the one you sent to earth.

John 17:3

To Make Him Known

But even before I was born, God chose me and called me by His marvelous grace. Then it pleased Himto reveal his Son to me so that I would proclaim the Good News about Jesus to the Gentiles.

Galatians 1:15-16

One of my favorite shows is called “This is Us”.  I am totally emotionally invested in this show. In the most recent episode something stood out to me and really illustrated what I’ve been studying and talking about to this point.

Kate, the daughter, struggles with her weight and her self-image.  It’s been a life long struggle for her. Regardless of how she felt about herself, her dad always tells her that she is beautiful.  She gets tired of hearing it and tells him, “I know you tell me I am beautiful but I don’t see it and neither does anyone else around me… SO JUST STOP.  STOP telling me that I am beautiful.”  You can see the confusion in her dad’s face.  Later on, she decides to view the video her dad recorded of her.  She plays the videotape and rather than looking at herself in the video her eyes are drawn to the reflection of her dad as he watches her.  Her dad looks at her with adoration, love and awe.  She can see and now believe that he really sees her as beautiful.  She goes to her dad and tells him, Don’t ever stop dad. Don’t ever stop telling me. He responds, I won’t ever stop.

Cultivate A “You”nique You

How precious are your thoughts about me, O God.
    They cannot be numbered!
I can’t even count them;
they outnumber the grains of sand!
And when I wake up,
    you are still with me!

Psalm 139:17-18

Child of God,

  • You are unique
  • You are beautiful
  • You are valuable
  • You are chosen
  • You are dearly loved
  • You are gifted
  • You are forgiven and redeemed
  • You have purpose

Are we going to believe God and begin seeing ourselves as God see us or are we going to continue to believe the lies of the enemy and the echoes of our past?

Are we going to remain stuck in a stagnant faith because we are too insecure to take a step forward toward the abundant life Jesus promised or are we going to march confidently around the walls of our inadequacies until they come tumbling down?

Do not spend another moment listening and believing the lies of the enemy.

Child of God
