Essential Oils, Wellness and Self-Care

During our recent post, Encouragement for the Exhausted Mommy , we mentioned Aroma Therapy as one of the 15 Self Care Tips. Since then, we’ve received a lot of inquiries and feedback about what we do and how we use our aroma therapy in our life.

Why Essential Oils

I recently took the plunge and decided to invest into any essential oils kit.  I heard about the benefits for years but didn’t have much interest that was until recently.

My son, oh my amazing and wonderful son, is 15 months and he is a handful.  Danger and adventure are his middle name.  His antics left this mommy on edge and worried most of the time.  A simple task such as washing the dishes now became an opportunity for destruction.

What is Aroma Therapy

When preparing to move into our home I did research on colors and how they impact our mood and behavior.  Our mind reacts to various colors in very specific and unique ways.  People in marketing are well aware of this and that is why you see “Red” in a lot of restaurants.   It is an aggressive color that promotes hunger  and excitement among other moods. I wanted to make sure the rooms in our home promoted various moods.  I selected orange (a color for creativity) as the color of some of the walls in our playroom.  The same can be said for scents.  If you wander the aisles at Target, like I do, then I’m sure you noticed all of the baby body wash and lotions with the “calming” lavender scent.

Aroma therapy is defined as the uses plant materials and aromatic plant oils, including essential oils, and other aroma compounds for improving psychological or physical well-being.

There are many mentions of oils and aromas throughout the Bible.  You do not have to search hard in scripture to find references.  If you are curious check out just a sample of the following: Exodus 30:22-33, Psalm 45:7-8, Isaiah 61:3 and Hebrews 1:9.

Oil and perfume make the heart glad,
and the sweetness of a friend comes from his earnest counsel.”

Proverbs 27:9

In my mind, this was it.  My plan was to diffuse lavender oil all day to calm down my adventurous child.  I decided to purchase a starter kit which came with a diffuser and variety of oils but I was really interested in lavender.

What is a Diffuser?

A diffuser is tool that is used to burn the oils and disperse them in the air.  You add water and a few drops of oil then the diffuser will provide a mist and release the oils into the air.

My Essential Oils Experience

So began my oils journey.  I am sharing my personal oils experience with you and how they’ve blessed our family.   I began burning the lavender oil all day as soon as I received my kit.  Much to my surprise during the first week my children napped 2-3 hours each day at the same time.  This has not happened since my son was an infant.  I thought this is an instant mom-win.  I am sold.

But the blessings did not stop there.  The second week I became curious about the other oils in my kit.  I’ve been very fortunate to belong to a community that promotes the education of oils and how to use them.

I explored other blends, like “Purification” which smells amazingly fresh.  I have a baby in diapers and let me tell you there is no need for Febreze anymore.  My home smells fresh and clean and the best part is that there aren’t any harsh chemicals in the air.  I also began diffusing peppermint oil which left me feeling energized and invigorated.  I had enough energy to workout which hasn’t happened in over 6 months.

This brings me to my current week, week 3.  I cannot believe I’ve only been using oils for 3 weeks.  After an exhausting weekend, I decided to add a drop of oil to my water to help wake me up.  I knew the benefits of drinking lemon water first thing in the morning but I wanted to give myself a little kick and with peppermint leaving me feeling so great I decided to add it to the mix.  In a glass cup (not plastic) I added one drop of lemon and one drop of peppermint oil in my water and drank it first thing in the morning.  Guys!  I have not felt better.  On Monday, I did not have the need for any coffee.  There wasn’t a crash and I didn’t get a headache.  For those of us that are MAJOR coffee drinkers, we know one day without coffee leads to a major headache.

It is now Friday and I haven’t had the need for any coffee or caffeine all week.  I did not crash and I feel great.  For those that follow-me on snapchat, they get the day-to-day play-by-play experience but I wanted to share with you all how amazing these oils have been for me and my family.

As I learn more, I will be sure to share because this is too good to keep to myself.
