Jehovah Nissi – The Lord is My Banner

“And Moses built an altar and named it “The LORD is my Banner”

Exodus 17:15

Have you ever felt you were fighting battle that you could not win? You feel as though you are unqualified, unskilled, outnumbered and over-powered.

This was the sentiment of the people of Israel, wandering in an unknown land with their wives, children and animals. In Exodus 17 (verses 8-15), we read of a battle at Rephidim.  The Amalekites attack Israel.  The people of Israel were not skilled fighters, they were freed slaves hanging on to the promise of God. Although they were numerous, they were not an army.

Moses instructed Joshua to select men to fight in this battle and said he would stand at the top of the mountain with the staff of God in his hand.

Preparing for Battle

Joshua and Moses both prepared for battle. Joshua battled in the physical and Moses battled in the spiritual.

The bible says,

So Joshua did as Moses told him, and fought with Amalek, while Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill. Whenever Moses held up his hand, Israel prevailed, and whenever he lowered his hand, Amalek prevailed. But Moses’ hands grew weary, so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it, while Aaron and Hur held up his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side. So his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.

And Joshua overwhelmed Amalek and his people with the sword.

Exodus 17:10-13

Together, they prevailed and beat the enemy of God’s people.  It is important to surround yourself with people who see you and your battles through the eyes of Christ.

Moses had Joshua, Aaron, and Hur who trusted God and took their place in the battle. They did not seek to hold the staff but instead step into their destiny for this battle – to the place God had called them for that season. They did not seek victory for their own glory but for the glory of God.

There are many times when we attempt to fight our battles in the physical only, doing everything in our own power and strength to gain the upper hand over a situation. We attempt to go to battle alone or we surround ourselves with the wrong people during the battle.

God is declaring is JEHOVAH NISSI over our battles.

The Lord is our Banner.  He goes ahead of us in battle. We do not have to fight our battles alone, or in our own strength, resources and abilities.

God declares His power and authority over our battles. He says we are covered by His “coat of arms”. We can walk into our battles knowing the we are not alone, the victory belongs to the Lord.

I pray that no matter what battle you are fighting today, that you will see Jesus is moving the situation around on your behalf. He is changing hearts, opening doors to new things, closing doors that lead down the wrong path and providing you unexpected favor. The LORD IS YOUR BANNER and He goes before you in battle.
